What is home care? Home care (non-medical), also known as in-home care, private duty or custodial care; is supportive care provided in the home to assist with daily living activities. Caregivers are trained to provide non-medical care to assist seniors with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, getting in and out of bed, and assistance with toilet. Other services that they can provide include: cooking, cleaning, laundry, transportation and other general assistance. Home care services allow people to remain at home rather than use residential, long-term or institutional nursing care. How do I pay for home care services? These services are usually paid with Long Term Care insurance or out of pocket. Services range from $15-35/hr depending on location and number of hours needed.

Yes! This service can be provided by home care companies. We can recommend some great companies in your area that provide this service. What is your dad’s zip code so we can connect you with a vetted company in that area?

The first step you should take is to do a lot of research on the subject. Look at the specific type of cancer he has as well. That means to search the web, talk to family and friends and maybe a doctor. Understand everything you can about this and then be understanding to your grandfather... more

Having to talk to our parents about various senior care issues is difficult and depressing. But it could also be a great bonding opportunity for parent and child. As our parents grow frail, roles reverse where the child now has to take charge to do what's best for mom or dad. Take this as an... more

You are not expected to bring her into your home, as so many people want to "guilt trip" you with this argument. You may not have the resources to help her, and could hurt her... more

99 and still active! Wow! That's awesome. I couldn't agree more with her family to use the walker more. It's for her own safety. It's better to use it and slow down than to fall. It's tough to recover from a fall at that age. You should encourage her to use it every time she is walking and... more

There are a few ways of doing this. I'm not sure if you have friends or family nearby to help. If you do, I would recommend that they help you with a simple "garage sale". Have them separate the valuable from the not so valuable. Garage sales are not for big ticket items. Furniture, yes... more
